ORC - Week 8
It's finally here the completion of my home office makeover! When I look around, I am so proud of my space. It's comfortable, moody, organized, lively, functional & sexy too. My space speaks to me. That's the ultimate goal as an Interior Designer is to have my client's completed spaces speak to them long after my team & I are gone. I feel like I'm thriving not just existing in my small office. Each corner of the room brings me joy every day. But before there was an end, there's a beginning. Let's take a look back shall we.
The Beginning
This is what the room became after our youngest son moved out. It's the smallest room in our 25-year-old home. I knew even though the space was small, it would make a perfect office for me. Enters the room's next phase. I really don't like to waste things & sustainable design is at top of mind, when I'm designing a space. Can the item be reused in another location? Can we swap it with a family member? Can we sell it or give it away to a good home? These are always my questions. I had some wallpaper I never used from a previous home. I decided to use it in making over my, we'll call it office version one.
Even though the room looked different, it really wasn't working properly to suit my needs. What I've learned as an Interior Designer is if something doesn't have a home, it will make a home somewhere, & it's not going to be pretty. Click the video below to see how "not having the proper storage", leads to a disorganized space.
Here comes the fall season of The One Room Challenge to save the day. This was an excellent opportunity for me to finally start my project, give me a timeline for completion, be intentional about the design & product selections made, just like I do for all my design clients. I started with listing the items I would keep, favorite things (the color green & animal print) & a mood board.
If you're thinking about making over a space in your home, here's my tips how to start.
Pick A Focal Point
I start with a rug. The foundational direction for design style & color. I searched in store & online. When I found THE ONE, I knew it was THE ONE. Isn't She Lovely!
The next key decision was color. How light or dark did I want to go. My Huband said, "It's your office so go all in". If you have a favorite color (green is mine) why not enjoy it every day. Life is too short to be bored by your walls.
Design Tip
Always test your potential wall color in your home before you commit to a color in the store. Factors to consider is your home's natural & artificial lighting. Remember to look at the color at different times of the day, as undertones of paint color can be more visible under different lighting.

To save on cost, I'm reusing my desk, light fixtures, drapes & reconfigured bookcases.
I'm all about sharing great products. You can click on any image to follow the finds via the links.
Since I work with a lot of different materials & sample, setting up my office into zones made sense. I created zones for fabric samples, rug samples, tile samples, cabinets, countertops, flooring & overall office supplies.

Lighting
One key factor for any design is lighting. They consist of overhead, accent & task. In my space, I'm using a gorgeous Spudnik Chandelier & classic wall sconces that came in a set of 2. I don't have separate task lighting, but I am in search of a small floor lamp to hover over my desk. The biggest lighting tip is to install overhead lighting on dimmers. It gives you control in setting the mood for a space. Accent lighting is a great way to feature some interesting in your space.
One of my favorite items are the remote-control plugs, they allow you to turn any device on or off with a simple click.

Another item to consider is greenery. Whether it's real or faux, incorporating a bit will warm up & elevate any space. I use a mix, real close to good natural light & faux where light or watering may be an issue.
The Final Layers
Lastly, are the final layers. Adding all of the accents, accessories, & personal mementos that make the space you. My home office is not just a place to work in but THRIVE! I feel joy, happiness, calmness & creativity every time I enter. Now, that's what supposed to happen with good design.
