ORC - Week 4
Welcome to week 4 of 2024's Fall One Room Challenge. I spoke about having a good foundation in an early post. Once your foundation is set it's time to add in your layers that scale up your design. I call them "Layers of Love". How many layers you add to a space depends on your design style. If you're a Minimalist, simple automated shades could work or no window treatments at all. If you're a Maximalist adding drapes, window shades & pillows to your space can complete your desired design aesthetic.
As an Interior Designer, I love the look of drapes. To me, they complete a space while adding depth & drama. Even in a Minimalist space, simple clean drapes & fab hardware can take a room's design over the top. When I was in design school, I did an internship at a custom drapery workroom. The knowledge I gained has been invaluable in my design career.
My silk drapes, I made many many moons ago. Over the years, I have used them in different rooms in my homes. Last used in a primary bedroom & now in my office. The style & sheen of pure silk is a level of elegance that will never tire.
By my calculation, the drapes are about 21 years old & still going strong.
I made them with a poofy header & still love them today.
The Next Layer
In addition to the drapes, I knew I wanted bamboo shades as a part of the completed look. I think a bamboo shade has timeless appeal. Now they are more affordable, have multitudes of color options & are CORDLESS! They lift with ease. My hubby installed them for me & I couldn't be more pleased. (We left our faux white blinds in place & hung the bamboo shades as an outside mount).

The next layer is one of my all-time favorites - PILLOWS! I love a great throw pillow. They bring texture, color, style & they can tie a room's design elements together.
I have 2 pillow stash storage containers filled with decorative pillow covers & down inserts to pull out on demand. I pulled out some oldies but goodies with sequins from Target. In design, we use the high/low approach. Some areas call for a more expensive decorative pillows, while other areas do not. With some leftover fabric (from a model home project @$85 per yard); it was just enough to make a new pillow for my chair.
